Hello!!!

The difference would be that they source from different suppliers. Hornbach and Bauhaus have a larger selection and more brand-name products overall compared to Byggmax, but Byggmax is probably the cheapest, I would think. However, the quality varies quite a bit at Byggmax, at least around Gothenburg. If one were to make an "overall top five list for purchasing building materials," it might look like this (in Gothenburg):

1st place: Beijer, Säve and Lerums trä
2nd place: all Woody stores
3rd place: Krauta
4th place: Hornbach, Bauhaus and Sylvan
5th place: Byggmax

Don't get me wrong, this is my personal opinion. As far as I know, I don't know any carpenters or construction companies that purchase materials for an entire build from either Hornbach, Bauhaus, or any of the lower-listed stores on my list. Instead, they go to the old established building supply stores. I've built with loose timber, and all my material comes from Lerumsträ because I live in Lerum. I've gotten the same prices on most of the material as if I had bought it from Hornbach or Bauhaus, because they want to keep me as a customer. But this is where opinions differ because some people on the forum think the opposite, so there's probably no right or wrong. I also want to point out that when I refer to building materials, I mean the timber. If you're buying brand-name products and they are available everywhere, then it's just a matter of negotiation, isn't it? I feel like I deviated quite a bit from your question, but maybe it gave you something to think about...

There are also a lot of small timber shops around Gothenburg, but they are usually more expensive. Generally, you can get the price down on most things if you're in the position of building an entire house with loose timber or similar. However, of course, if you want really cheap, then you go to Poland.

Best regards,
Skopis

It depends on what you're looking for. If it's lumber, I think Byggmax is among the cheapest, but there are alternatives. Find out where you can buy the cheapest lumber, take that price list in hand to a "real" lumber dealer and ask if he can match that price. You will be surprised; suddenly there are opportunities to lower the price.

Big difference in prices.

Byggmax clearly has the best prices.

:)

I have built a garage from scratch. I've purchased most of the materials at Byggmax and K-rauta. I have to say that Byggmax has very good prices on all the "small items" like screws, nails, handles, gutters, downspouts, and such. The lumber is also cheap, but there is less difference there.

Bauhaus is very expensive on smaller items, but they have certain lure items where they are very cheap. You have to pick and choose a bit there to get the most for your money.
